Case Study: Tree Removal Application Supported by Shadow Diagrams

Client: Warren Nelson, ACT
Project Type: Residential Solar Access & Tree Removal Application
Outcome: Approval for removal of 5 out of 7 trees, plus crown thinning for 1

Background

Warren approached us with a challenge many homeowners face — large established trees on neighbouring land were severely impacting the solar access and amenity of his property. Seeking approval from the ACT Government to remove or manage the trees required strong evidence that shadowing was significantly affecting the site.

Our Role

To support Warren’s application, we prepared a series of accurate shadow diagrams showing the impact of the trees on his property throughout the year. These diagrams provided a clear and objective assessment that could be submitted with the tree removal application.

The Result

The ACT Government approved the removal of five out of the seven trees identified in the application. Of the remaining two, one was approved for crown thinning, while the other was retained without modification. In their assessment, the ACT Government specifically referenced the shadow diagrams as the key evidence supporting the decision.

Client Feedback

Warren shared his gratitude:

“We received advice from the ACT Government that five of the proposed seven trees were approved for removal. In each case, the shadow diagrams were referenced as the evidence that supported their decision… The bottom line is that I would never have achieved this outcome without your excellent shadow diagrams. They were key to getting the application across the line. A huge thank you to you!”

Conclusion

While not all trees were approved for removal, Warren gained a significant improvement in solar access with five removals and additional thinning approved. This case highlights how professional shadow diagrams can be instrumental in securing fair outcomes in tree-related applications, ensuring decisions are based on clear, objective evidence.

Blog: How Shadow Diagrams Can Help with Tree Removal Applications

When trees on or near your property block sunlight, the impact can be frustrating — particularly when it reduces solar access, affects gardens, or interferes with the efficiency of solar panels. Gaining approval to remove or manage these trees often comes down to one key factor: evidence.

Recently, a client in the ACT applied to remove seven large trees overshadowing his home. By submitting detailed shadow diagrams with his application, he was able to demonstrate the extent of shading caused by the trees throughout the year. The ACT Government reviewed the evidence and approved the removal of five trees, plus crown thinning of another. In their decision, the shadow diagrams were directly cited as the supporting evidence that made the case clear.

This result highlights the value of professional shadow diagrams:

  • ✅ They provide clear, objective evidence

  • ✅ They illustrate seasonal and daily shadow impacts

  • ✅ They strengthen applications for tree removal or thinning

  • ✅ They give decision-makers the confidence to support fair outcomes

While not every application will achieve 100% approval, even partial success — as in this case — can significantly improve solar access and quality of life.

If you’re planning to submit a tree removal application, professional shadow diagrams can make the difference between approval and rejection.
